Robert Downey Jr

Robert Downey Jr, has insisted that he has not signed on for any more of the main Iron Man movies and that Iron Man 4 has not began production, at a recent BAFTA dinner in Los Angeles Downey was asked how many times he’d be reprising the role. He said that it may verge on double digits.

So for the sake of clarity (or obsession) let’s do the math. With Captain America: Civil War, the Avengers: Age of Ultron, and the Avengers Infinity follow-ups, all set to feature Tony Stark/Iron Man, that brings us up to 8 films in total (including all of his previous appearances).

Now while we could easily say 8 is basically verging on double digits, we get the feeling there is at least one more appearance waiting in the wings. Could this be the elusive Iron Man 4, which was not named at the big reveal, that listed everything through “Phase 3″?

Or will we see Downey appear in one of the other movies from the massive list, such as Captain Marvel, in order to give it a boost from an established star?

One theory put forward is that there is still one Marvel movie yet to be announced, and this could include Tony Stark/Iron Man.

Before the big Phase 3 reveal there was always an unnamed movie pegged for July, 2016. While this could have been chopped and changed and swallowed in to the line-up, what if it’s still in the pipeline and they’re just keeping it quiet? There are many possibilities for this. Could it be a new stand alone Iron Man film? An epilogue to the Civil War film? What about the long list of other properties that have yet to get silver screen treatment? Names like the Punisher, The Runaways, Blade, or Black Widow? He could potentially make cameos in some of those if they were ever to happen.

Ultimately we won’t know until it’s official. Robert Downey Jr. could have simply forgotten how many films he’s even been in when put on the spot by a reporter.
