National Spelling Bee: Changes have been made, The National Spelling has changed their rules. The Scripps National Bee have added another aspect to their infamous spelling bee. According to an April 10 report by KMAS News Radio, vocabulary has been added to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The director of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, Paige Kimble, stated that “spelling and vocabulary” are “two sides of the same coin.” Because of that, participants in the Scripps National Spelling Bee will not only have to be able to spell the words, but they will also have to know the meaning of those words.
Half of the speller's score will be a computer-based vocabulary test. Those scores will be factored in and will help determine who will continue to the semifinal and championship rounds.
The addition of vocabulary will be added to the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee. That will be held from May 28-30 in Maryland. The Scripps National Spelling Bee can be seen on ESPN.
