4-year-old shoots 6-year-old: Playdate turns into tragedy

4-year-old shoots 6-year-old: Playdate turns into tragedy, A 4-year-old shoots a 6-year-old in New Jersey while the two were having a playdate. On April 9, CNN reported that the 4-year-old went into the house, grabbed a gun, and then went back outside and shot his 6-year-old friend. The children's parents were in a nearby yard and watched the whole thing happen. When they realized what was going on, it was too late. One of the boys had been shot.

"It's really difficult to deal with. This is something that shouldn't have happened. It's horrible," said the 6-year-old's uncle, Daniel Watkins. Horrible may even be an understatement.

When a 4-year-old shoots a 6-year-old there are a lot of questions. The first being how the child knew where the gun was followed by why was it in reach and why was it loaded? Many people wonder why parents would keep a loaded gun (in this instance a .22 caliber rifle) in their home free and not in a gun safe. Do you blame the gun owner (presumably one of the parents ) in this case?

"The Atlantic County prosecutor's office is leading the investigation to determine whether charges will be filed in the case and, if so, against whom," said Toms River police Chief Michael Mastronardy.

The 4-year-old shoots a 6-year-old headline is just the latest tragedy involving children who "accidentally" set off a loaded gun.
