Mount Vernon Police Department disciplines officer after his gun was stolen, A Mount Vernon police officer, who reported his gun missing a month ago, was disciplined by the Mount Vernon Police Department after an internal investigation.
The officer originally reported: The weapon was stolen from the department’s men’s locker room, but Deputy Commissioner Greg Burke said, there were no pry marks or evidence suggesting the gun was stolen from the locker.
Burke continued to say, the officer, after “soul searching,” realized the gun, which is an off-duty, personally-owned Glock model 26, was stolen from the officer’s personal vehicle.
In a statement sent out by the Mount Vernon Police Department, Burke said, “It is unacceptable that the officer failed to safeguard his weapon. The officer has agreed to disciplinary action without the necessity of a departmental trial.”
Burke said he did not know if the gun was loaded.
The investigation will continue as the Mount Vernon police search for the stolen gun.
The Mount Vernon Police Department, citing department policy regarding disciplinary action of an officer, did not provide the officer’s identity or give any further information.
Mayor Ernie Davis did not reply to calls asking for more information.
