Cleanup near completion after Hattiesburg tornado; cost estimated at over $500K, Two months after a powerful tornado tore a destructive path across parts of southern Mississippi, officials says the cleanup process is near completion.

The Hattiesburg American reported on Monday (April 8) that the damage created by the Feb. 10 tornado across parts of Lamar and Forrest counties is expected to be completed by early May at an estimated cost of over $500,000.

The EF-4 tornado with winds up to 170 mph tracked 21 miles on the ground from northeastern Lamar County across Forrest County and into western Perry County, while hitting the heavily populated areas of Oak Grove, West Hattiesburg, the city of Hattiesburg and Petal, according to the National Weather Service. More than 80 people were injured.

Petal completed its debris cleanup on March 22 at a cost of approximately $100,000, Mayor Hal Marx said.

In Hattiesburg, John Brown, assistant to the mayor, said the final day for debris pickup in the city is April 15. Brown said the cost of cleanup there is about $500,000.

Jake Sones, the Lamar County Road Department manager, said crews removed approximately 35,000 cubic yards of vegetative debris and more than 1,500 tons of construction debris.

The Lamar County Board of Supervisors set a May 2 deadline for debris cleanup.
