Chris Cornell Zac Brown

Chris Cornell Zac Brown, The Zac Brown Band brought a little down home Georgia to New York City tonight (March 7) with their Saturday Night Live debut.

The band took the 8H stage on this episode hosted by Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth to preview their upcoming album, Jekyll + Hyde, out April 28, kicking things off with their new single, “Homegrown.”

On it Zac Brown sings about his best friends down the street and on this night he was surrounded by his seven bandmates, giving fans a taste of what they’ll see when his band kicks off their latest tour on May 1 in Nashville, TN.

Brown has been mum about what his band’s new album sounds like, saying only, it will have “things that people will expect and things that they won’t.” But, this track has all the trappings of a good Zac Brown jamboree, from a little banjo to a lot of guitar.

It gets hard not to start clapping along when Brown starts singing, “I’ve got everything I need/ And nothing that I don’t.”

The band’s second song though, delved a little deeper into the rock realm, and warranted a different kind of hat from Brown. Literally—this one was a top hat with a feather.

The new song “Heavy Is the Head” featured Soundgarden‘s Chris Cornell on guitar and some lines about “Smoke on the Water.” It also makes it clear it’s not easy being in charge, as Cornell sings, “Heavy is the head that wears the crown.” We’ll assume this is more of the Mr. Hyde side of the upcoming record.

This week’s show had some fun taking swipes at Empire by adding a white character in khakis named Chip to the show. He’s the character for anyone who doesn’t really understand hip-hop. Hemsworth got to play the square character with an even squarer jaw who ends up spending a lot of time talking about expense reports.

Iggy Azalea also got her own skit as a talk show host of The Iggy Azalea Show who sporadically raps a little off beat and has guests like Azalea Banks, who accuses her of stealing, well, everything.

Hemsworth gets to be her cool Aussie cousin, who looks a bit like Riff Raff and has a few Tip Hops for all the people out there—you know, tips for people in hip-hop, like how you should make gun sounds. He even reveals what a very tiny gun sounds like, incase you need to put that in a rap.

His most important rule though is that if you get tired of rapping, let your booty do the talking. Something I-G-G-Y can certainly get behind.
