Bin lorry hits group of pedestrians in central Glasgow, Police have confirmed there are a “number of fatalities” after a bin lorry hit pedestrians in central Glasgow.

Eyewitnesses described bodies lying in the road after the incident which happened as the city centre was crowded with Christmas shoppers.

Police Scotland were unable to confirm reports of up to six fatalities in the incident in George Square close to Queen Street Station. They said there had been “a number of fatalities and people injured”.

The lorry was travelling on Queen Street “when it appeared to strike pedestrians outside the Gallery of Modern Art before continuing to travel towards George Square, when it crashed at the Millenuium Hotel”, Police Scotland said.
Scores of emergency service personnel are at the scene.

“We are attending a serious road incident at George Square in Glasgow, which occurred at 2.30pm,” police said on Twitter.
The lorry crashed into the side of the Millennium Hotel, which is next to the station. The city centre was packed with Christmas shoppers at the time.

Police asked people to avoid the area to “allow rescue” and said diversions and road closures were in place around George Square.

The Scottish Fire Service tweeted: “Firefighters are in attendance at a serious incident in Queen Street, Glasgow. Our crews are working alongside other emergency responders.”
