Oh, 2014. We shall never forget you as the year of food hybrids. Dominique Ansel forever changed the food world when he created the Cronut in '13, and 2014 brought a slew of unheard of combos: burrito-ramen, cinnamon roll-pancakes, and many more eyebrow-raising creations. We consider these seven to be the most viral of the year, but you decide which one reigns supreme! Photos: Anna Monette Roberts and POPSUGAR Studios.
THE COOKIE SHOT
In March, Dominique Ansel, famed Cronut maker, introduced the world to a new splendid delight: The Cookie Shot, a chocolate chip cookie shot glass, filled with vanilla milk. Though in our review we found the authentic CS a little oily and overrated, our recipe hack is not to be skipped! Photo: Anna Monette Roberts.
THE WAFFLE TACO
Taco Bell's new breakfast menu, released in March, blew up the Internet. The Waffle Taco did what no man have ever thought of before — insert breakfast taco fillings in a soft waffle shell. Though Taco Bell may have missed the mark on its Waffle Tacos, we went ahead and developed some gourmet waffle tacos. Photo: Anna Monette Roberts.
CINNAMON ROLL PANCAKES
Twitter nearly shut down when @Males_Thoughts tweeted a pic of cinnamon roll pancakes. Inspired by such a delicious-sounding hybrid, we created two versions: an advanced pancake recipe with a cinnamon swirl and an easy cinnamon-rolls-turned-pancake recipe. Photo: Anna Monette Roberts.
THE WONUT
It was the year of taking unlikely things . . . and cooking them in a waffle maker. One of the best (and most successful) variations turned out to be the Wonut, a waffle-doughnut hybrid developed by Chicago's Waffles Café. Since not everyone lives in Chicago, we did what any normal doughnut lover would do: we made our own glazed-and-sprinkled Wonuts. Photo: POPSUGAR Studios.
THE RAMENRITTO
Half Japanese ramen, half Mexican burrito, the Ramenritto from Presstea in NYC (released this Summer) amazed us in theory but failed in execution. However, it did succeed in inspiring us to develop our own glorious take. Photo: POPSUGAR Studios.
DORITOS LOADED
Part fried mozzarella stick, part Doritos, the fried, Doritos-crusted cheddar bites, more fondly known as Doritos Loaded, shocked snackers at 7-Eleven this Summer. However, before the nationwide release, we hacked a homemade version. Sorry, arteries! Photo: Anna Monette Roberts.
CHURRO ICE CREAM SANDWICH
Sure, churros have been dipped in hot chocolate before, but here's something new and never before seen: Churro Borough, a Los Angeles churro pop-up, fried them up into thin disks to use in ice cream sandwiches. But even if you can't get to LA, have no fear - we too created a homemade churro ice cream sandwich recipe. Photo: POPSUGAR Studios.
