Priyanka Chopra becomes the first Indian Guess girl, Guess is famous for its girls. Claudia Schiffer has taken the title twice while Kate Upton, Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio and even Paris Hilton and Drew Barrymore have all smouldered for the American brand in its signature sexy ad campaigns. But along with the requisite looks, every Guess girl up until now has had one thing in common; they've all been white.
But that's about to change, and it's because of Bollywood star and former Miss World, Priyanka Chopra. The 31-year-old was shot by Bryan Adams (yes, that Bryan Adams) for the new campaign, which will break in December issues of top fashion titles.
"Being the next Guess girl was something that I would have never thought of, but when I met Paul [Marciano, Guess creative director], he was like, 'You're it. It has to be you.' I'm like their first brown model," Chopra told WWD . "For a global fashion brand, for them to move their campaign into a global space, for me it's an honour."
Chopra was set to be an engineer when she got caught up in the beauty pageant circuit, first entering and winning Miss India, aged just 17, and then Miss World, of which she was the youngest winner ever. A film career in her native India followed shortly after, and she's now a megastar in her homeland. She's about to begin a music career too - her debut album will be released next spring.
"Priyanka's confidence, strength and sensuality reflect the qualities I always look for in a model," said Paul Marciano, founder of the brand. "She reminds me of the young Sophia Loren and the top actresses of the 1950s. With the Indian movie industry exploding on a global stage, and GUESS having a brand presence in 87 countries, we could not have found a better global brand ambassador. Choosing Priyanka reinforces our celebration of multi-talented, dynamic and accomplished women."
