Tropical Storm Gabrielle downgraded to depression, Gabrielle was downgraded from a tropical storm to a tropical depression Thursday, prompting the discontinuation of all alerts for Puerto Rico, forecasters said.
Gabriel, with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph, was about 81 miles south-southeast of Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and about 105 miles west-southwest of Ponce, Puerto Rico, and moving northwest at 9 mph, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said in its 11 a.m. EST advisory.
All watches and warnings for Puerto Rico were discontinued, the center said.
The Dominican Republic government changed the tropical storm warning for Cabo Engano to Cabo Frances Viejo to a tropical storm watch, and discontinued the tropical storm watch from Santo Domingo to Cabo Engano.
Gabrielle was expected to maintain its forecast path for the next 24 hours or so, forecasters said. The storm was expected to degenerate to a remnant low pressure area Thursday night or Friday as its center moves over the Dominican Republic.
Gabrielle is expected to produce 2 to 4 inches of rain over Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, with isolated amounts of up to 8 inches. Forecasters said the rain could cause dangerous flash floods and mudslides.
