Worst airline: Study shows United ranks as least favorite among fliers, And the award for America’s worst rated airline goes to: United Airlines.
The Daily Press carried an April 9 Reuters report that named California-based airline Virgin America as tops in customer satisfaction, while United Airlines was the worst, according to a 2013 study.
"Every time there are more planes in the sky and more people flying, airline performance suffers," said Dean Headley, associate professor of marketing at the W. Frank Barton School of Business at Wichita State University.
The 23rd annual Airline Quality Rating ranked 14 airlines on their on-time arrivals and departures, denied boardings, mishandled baggage and consumer complaints. Information was compiled from the Department of Transportation.
JetBlue and AirTran Airways ranked second and third, respectively, as the best-performing airlines.
Customer complaints increased slightly from 2011. Complaints per 100,000 passengers rose from 1.19 in 2011 to 1.43 in 2012, according to the study.
Only three of the 14 airlines saw an improvement in their customer complaint rates. United Airlines had the highest complaint rate, while Southwest Airlines had the lowest.
Virgin America, new to the airline industry as of 2007, has already captured a host of airline awards. According to their web site, the airline is a four-time recipient of the “Best Domestic Airline” in Condé Nast Traveler’s Reader’s Choice Awards. Virgin was also ranked number one in Zagat’s Global Airlines Survey in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
