Three men convicted of killing business owner in 2002 home invasion, An Atlanta business man was shot multiple times and left to die during a home invasion. And more than a decade later three men have been found guilty of his murder.
Two others were killed before being brought to justice.
Mr. Demetrius Brewer, 32, Mr. James McDowell, 34, and Mr. Loyd Stephens, 41, were convicted Friday of killing the 37-year-old man, according to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office.
Mr. Eric Kemp was shot and killed Oct. 25, 2002 inside his Simpson Road home, which also doubled as a business once known as The House of Bass, the district attorney’s spokeswoman Ms. Yvette Jones said.
That night officers responded to the home after getting a call about shots fired and found the man’s body draped across a pool table in a pool of blood.
“Witnesses reported seeing several people flee the scene after hearing the gunshots,” Ms. Jones said. “Two days after the murder, two of the men suspected of being involved in Kemp’s murder were found shot to death."
The other three: Mr. Brewer, Mr. McDowell and Mr. Stephens remained at large. Between 2010 and 2011, police developed additional information that implicated the three in Mr. Kemp’s murder, she said.
“According to the investigation, the men stormed the victim’s Atlanta home in a robbery attempt and then opened fire when he offered resistance,” Ms. Jones said.
Mr. Brewer and Mr. McDowell were sentenced to life without parole. Mr. Stephens, who also faces life without parole, will be sentenced on April 15.
Prosecutors said Mr. Stephens and Mr. McDowell were also indicted for a 2006 murder in Fulton County and arrested for a 2008 murder in DeKalb County.
