On April 8, Hollywood Reporter carried a statement from the church group, whose members called Ebert an “enabler” and complained that he used his Twitter account in order “to mock the faithful servants of God at Westboro Baptist Church.”

Westboro Baptists, who as a group are notorious for picketing funerals of soldiers and gay teenagers, also called Ebert a “fool [who] sold his soul for some fame & fortune.”

The Pulitzer Prize-winning Ebert died April 4 at the age of 70 after a decade long battle with cancer. Ebert was first diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2002, and multiple surgeries had left him without the ability to speak in later years.
