Cruise ship fines set: Concordia wreck brings $1.3M fine from judge , The 2012 wreck of the Costa Concordia has resulted in cruise ship fines of 1 million euros ($1.3 million). The news came out on April 10 of the judge's decision in Tuscany, Italy. The Italian cruise line Costa Crociere SpA agreed to a plea bargain regarding the fines. The Press Herald shared the details.
Costa is a division of Carnival Corp., which has had its fair share of challenges these past few months. As many will remember, the Concordia incident left 32 dead and the cruise line points to Capt. Francesco Schettino as the one responsible. The captain chose to take the ship off-course and as a result it rammed into a reef and got a long gash in the hull. The ship capsized, and many lost their lives.

In addition to the cruise ship fines, there are criminal charges pending. Prosecutors aim to indict Schettino and five others on multiple charges including manslaughter. The five facing charges include a Costa official who was on land dealing with the crisis, two officials who were on the bridge, and two helmsmen. Schettino of course faces the stiffest potential charges. While he has tried to say he was a hero in the incident, those on-board recount a very different tale.
The cruise ship fines hardly make amends for the families and area traumatized by the Costa Concordia incident, but it certainly is a start. Whether Capt. Francesco Schettino is found guilty of manslaughter and the other possible charges remains to be seen, but many think that should be the course this takes.
