FTSE LIVE: Footsie gains as ECB launches asset purchase programme from March 9; euro sinks to lows, The Footsie pushed up towards session highs in late afternoon trading as European markets extended their gains after European Central Bank president Mario Draghi announced that the central bank would kick off its €1trillion government bond-buying programme on March 9.

With an hour and a half of trading to go, the FTSE 100 index was 40.7 points, or 0.6 per cent higher at 6,959.9, while the Dax 30 index in Frankfurt gained 0.9 per cent and Paris’s CAC 40 index added 1.0 per cent.

On currency markets, however, the euro fell to an 11 1/2-year low against the dollar and a fresh 7-year trough against the pound after Draghi left the door open for asset purchases beyond September 2016.Read More
