Sinkhole eats snowplow: New Jersey sinkholes swallows snowplow whole

Sinkhole eats snowplow: New Jersey sinkholes swallows snowplow whole , A snowplow eating sinkhole is the last thing that residents of the Northeast want to deal with after what has proven thus far to be a winter marked with bitter, sub-zero temps. But a plowman working the streets in Lopatcong, New Jersey got the surprise of his life Tuesday morning when his truck went belly up – or down as it were – into the gaping hole.

MSN video on Feb. 18 showed the truck, with a load of salt and its light still flashing, sticking straight up out of the 20-foot hole. The snowplow operator was able to escape out of the cab with minor injuries and call for help.

Cities along the East Coast and Lower Canada have been pelted with heavy snows and temperatures that have dropped into the negatives, with wind chills pushing down into the minus 20 and 30 degrees.

Residents of Wordsworth Lane woke up to the unusual sight, and pics of the upright plow have been making the social media rounds, along with other photos indicative of a brutal winter.

Adds Weather.com: “Police told Lehigh Valley Live that there was a water main break in the area at the time the sinkhole formed, which was either caused by or the reason for the sinkhole. Residents said they saw water gushing under the truck before a crew came to shut the water off, according to a separate Lehigh Valley Live report.”

Mayor Tom McKay said earlier this week that he planned to visit Weeks in the hospital. “We hope there's no more surprises like this on the horizon for our town,” McKay said. “The main thing is everyone is OK.”
