'I've learnt a lot from them': Eddie Redmayne praises Australian Neighbours stars after scooping up Oscar for Best Actor, He grew up watching Australian soap Neighbours.
And after winning the Oscar for Best Actor at the 87th annual Academy Awards, Eddie Redmayne has given two of the long-running show's stars a nod.
The actor and Burberry model, who won the gong for his outstanding portrayal of physicist Stephan Hawkins in The Theory Of Everything, told reporters after his win he thinks the actors behind married couple Karl and Susan Kennedy are 'amazing'.
'I'm a huge fan of them from old,' the 33-year-old said from backstage of Alan Fletcher and Jackie Woodburne who have been with the series since 1994.
'I've learnt a lot from them from watching them daily.'His comments come after he recently told Elle magazine: 'They are the greatest unsung acting duo in history.'
'Watch, and you'll find that everything they do is on another level of genius. I really do think so.'
He went on to add that he would have 'complete stage fright' if he were ever to meet them and imagines he would be left speechless.
Responding to such high praise from the lauded actor, Alan said he was humbled.
'[It] means more to me than he will ever know,' he told news.com.au, adding that he and Jackie were 'thrilled' by the mention.
Eddie scooped up the coveted gong for Best Actor after beating competition from Steve Carell, Bradley Cooper, Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Keaton.
Almost too choked up to speak, he was handed the honour by last year's Best Actress winner Cate Blanchett.
'Thank you – I don't I'm capable of articulating quite how I feel right now but please know this – I am fully aware of that I am lucky, lucky man,' he began, clutching his trophy.
'This Oscar – wow! –this Oscar, this belongs to all of those people around the world, battling ALS,' he added staring at the statuette in disbelief.
Eddie's backstage reference to Neighbours stars Alan and Jackie was almost the closest an Australian got to an award in 2015 after Australian talent was largely snubbed with Naomi Watts, Sia and The Lego Movie all failing to earn a nod.
Naomi's exclusion was the biggest surprise as the highly acclaimed star had two shots at Best Supporting Actress with roles in Birdman and St Vincent, but didn't make the category.
Many Australians did attend however, with Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts and Margot Robbie all presenting awards on the night.
Kylie Minogue, Miranda Kerr, Jessica Hart, Cody Simpson and Isla Fisher meanwhile, were all seen kicking up their heels at various afterparties around Hollywood and Beverly Hills.
