Malia hip hop, Unlike many teens, Malia Obama isn’t incessantly posting selfies online. But one started floating around the ‘net on Sunday night — and it suggests that the oldest daughter of President Barack Obama is a fan of Joey Bada$$ and Pro Era.
The somewhat grainy photo — notable, since almost all pictures of the First Family are professional — shows the 16-year-old rocking a white tee with the Pro Era logo on it. Though it has dubious origins, the official PE Twitter account sent it out, and members of the Brooklyn collective have been retweeting it.
It’s easy to see pundits trying to turn this into some sort of politicized statement (and not just because Joey was reportedly arrested this weekend) — ’cause that’s never happened before when politicians somehow got tied to rappers, right? But let’s call it what it is: A teenager being a teenager.
And it looks like this teenager is a fan of Pro Era. Good. The dudes can spit. I like lyrics, too, Malia.
It’s unclear how her dad will feel about this, but he did explain why he didn’t want her on Facebook in an interview with MTV prior to his re-election — and it’s easy to understand why.
“I’d worry about Facebook,” Obama told MTV’s Sway Calloway back in 2012. “I know the folks at Facebook, they’ve revolutionized social networks. But Malia, because she’s well-known, I’m very keen on protecting her privacy. She can make her own decisions as she gets older, but right now, for security reasons, she does not have a Facebook page.”
