Long lashes bad for eyes

Long lashes bad for eyes, Are long lashes bad for the eyes? A recently released study is saying that long eyelashes — including false — may actually funnel air and dust into the eye, causing minor to intermediate problems. Newser News reported this Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015, that their extended use or maintenance can lead to the eyes drying out over time. With so many women using such products on a daily or relatively frequent basis, this issue is definitely an important cause for concern.

In order to begin their study to determine if long lashes are bad for the eyes, researches conducted measurements on the eyelashes of animals. Most animals have a third of a width of the average human eye and are effective for human examination, says the report. In their findings, these natural lashes were quite effective in protecting the eye against dirt, dust, and even drying by sustaining a pocket of “air” in front of the eyeball.

Yet that was only the beginning of the research, says Today News on the interesting study. After looking over these natural eyelashes, experts turned their gaze to synthetic lashes — particularly long ones connected with artificial eyes. These eyes were little more than aluminum bits containing water, but were satisfactory for the experiment. At natural or normal lengths, the eyes were successful as they were in keeping out dust and other particles. They were also able to prevent overall evaporation of moisture through a minute “wind tunnel” of sorts.

However, when they were extended in the examination, these lashes — mirroring real-life false eyelashes — actually funneled air into the direction of the artificial eye. This made them much dryer and actually brought in more dust and harmful particles. It is important to note that this study has not yet initiated tests on women with long lashes or who use fake products.

Nonetheless, continues the press release, at least one eye doctor has said that a number of dry-eye incidents he comes across in patients may be a direct result of mascara being repeatedly utilized in an attempt to pull at and increase overall lash length. "Dry eye is multifactorial, but I think this could be a contributing factor," the medical official noted. Eyelash extensions can cause even more severe issues, noted a corneal surgeon from California.

So are long lashes bad for your eyes in the end? This study cannot give a concrete answer either way, but evidence is beginning to point to the possibility of “yes.” Air may be funneled into the eyeball, bringing in more dust and irritating dirt particles that can inflame the eye. Acids in a glue stick on false lashes can also damage the cornea or even cause harmful abrasions.
