Josh McCown lobbies Bucs to hire Marc Trestman as offensive coordinator, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Josh McCown threw together the best season of his career and earned himself a starter’s job in Tampa while playing for Marc Trestman at Chicago last season.
It should come as no surprise then that McCown gave Trestman what appeared to be a ringing endorsement when asked if he thought Trestman might be a good fit as the Bucs new offensive coordinator.
“In regard to (Trestman coming) here, yeah, I would keep that conversation between (Bucs coach) Lovie (Smith) and I,’’ McCown said earlier this week. “But I think Marc is an outstanding coach and an outstanding person and he has a great sense of offensive football, especially quarterback play.
“I just know that, for me personally, I played my best football in my career under him. So obviously I have good things to say. But I’ve been around a bunch of different guys over the course of my career, and he was probably the most detailed with game plans and things like that. I really felt like he was on top of it.’’
McCown completed 149 of his 224 passes (66.5-percent) for 1,829 yards, 13 touchdowns and one interception while playing for Trestman and the Bears last season.
He slipped horribly this year, completing just 184 of 327 passes (56.3 percent) for 2,206 yards, 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, while also losing four of 10 fumbles.
The Bucs are on the lookout for an offensive coordinator to replace Jeff Tedford, the former University of California coach who never coached a regular season game with the Bucs after undergoing a heart procedure in August.
Trestman, who replaced Smith as head coach in Chicago, was fired after his second season on the job on Monday.
