The Billie Joe Armstrong-fronted band will join fellow rockers Lou Reed and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts in a ceremony on April 18th in Cleveland.
Late Texas guitar slinger Stevie Ray Vaughan, soul star Bill Withers and blues group the Paul Butterfield Blues Band will also be inducted, while Beatles drummer Ringo Starr will receive the Award for Musical Excellence. Ringo was inducted in 1988 with the Beatles, and since then, his bandmates have each been honored separately.So which nominees were passed by? Nine Inch Nails, The Smiths, Kraftwerk, N.W.A., Chic, and Sting will have to wait for their chance to be celebrated in Ohio’s hallowed hall.
This was the first year that Green Day was eligible to be inducted (the rule is that your first album had to be released 25 years ago). In an interview with Rolling Stone, Armstrong said he simply couldn’t believe their nomination: “We’re all in a surreal state right now.”
And as for his fellow nominees — Armstrong is pumped to even be listed next to Joan Jett.
“Oh my God. It’s great. I’m so happy for her,” he told the mag. “One of the first records that [bassist] Mike [Dirnt] and I had, it must have been 1983, was I Love Rock and Roll. The way that she is just this badass woman and probably the sh– she had to deal with in a male-dominated rock scene, it’s just an honor to be side-by-side with her.”
The induction ceremony will be at Cleveland’s Public House and broadcast on HBO in May.
