Nick Mangold injures ankle, leaves NY Jets locker room on crutches

Nick Mangold injures ankle, leaves NY Jets locker room on crutches, Nick Mangold left the Jets’ locker room on crutches Sunday after suffering an injury to his left ankle in the 17-16 loss to the Patriots, but an X-ray revealed the center did not suffer a break, according to a source. Mangold will have an MRI to determine the full scope of the injury.

Mangold, a veteran leader and the team’s long-time center, was carted off midway through the second quarter. He was hurt on a 14-yard Wildcat run by Bilal Powell.

As doctors tended to Mangold on the ground, Patriots players, in addition to Jets teammates, circled the well-respected Mangold. Patriots defensive lineman Vince Wilfork, who has battled Mangold for years, gave the 2006 first-rounder an encouraging pat on the helmet as he was loaded on to a cart.

“That was greatly appreciated, even if I wasn’t in the best mood at the time,” Mangold said of Wilfork’s gesture. He was replaced by Dalton Freeman.

DOUBLE THE PAIN

Mangold wasn’t the only star player to be knocked out of Sunday’s contest for the Jets: Percy Harvin left with a rib injury to go with an ankle sprain. The receiver had totaled four receptions for 44 yards before getting hurt.

FOILED AGAIN

Rex Ryan appeared annoyed at a pair of controversial video reviews that didn’t go the Jets’ way. The sticks on a critical spot in the fourth quarter appeared to show the Patriots short of a first down, but they were given one anyway. Ryan challenged, but the call was not overturned.

A close call on a review of Jonas Gray’s 1-yard touchdown run — he may have had his knee down before crossing the goal line — also was not reversed.

“I was really shocked by that one because his knee was clearly down,” Ryan said. “I guess they had a different camera angle or whatever. A shot off a wall must have showed he was in. To be honest with you, I never saw it.”

HARRIS MILESTONES

David Harris made 10 total tackles and now has 1,008 for his career. His 1,000th tackle came on a sack of Tom Brady that he split with Calvin Pace.
