LAPD investigates ‘offensive & absurd’ parody song mocking Michael Brown’s death, Here’s what you can see in a video obtained and published by TMZ earlier this month: A doorway, and a few people milling around what appears to be an event room. What’s more notable is what you can hear: A man performing a parody of “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown.”
Two men took to fightin’
And Michael punched in through the door
And Michael looked like some old Swiss cheese
His brain was splattered on the floor
And he’s dead, dead Michael Brown
Deadest man in the whole damn town
His whole life’s long gone
Deader than a roadkill dog
The footage of the event held at the Elks Lodge in Glendale, Calif., was captured by an attendee who “videotaped it because they were offended by the song and upset no one was objecting,” TMZ reported.
According to TMZ, the song — which refers to the fatal shooting of the 18-year-old Brown in Ferguson, Mo. — was performed at a charity event put together by a retired Los Angeles Police Department officer. The event was attended by about 50 to 60 people, according to TMZ, which noted that “about half were cops, most of whom were retired.” An attorney for Gary Fishell, the singer, told TMZ that his client now understands the parody was “off color and in poor taste.”
TMZ reported:
The lawyer adds, “He’s a goofball who writes funny songs.” We asked why Fishell would sing this in a room full of cops, and the lawyer replied, “He thought the room would get a kick out of it.”
After the video surfaced, the LAPD said it would investigate, according to reports.
“I am aware of the video released via TMZ. Like many of you, I find it offensive & absurd. It does not reflect the values of the #LAPD,” LAPD Chief Charlie Beck wrote in a series of tweets. “I have directed our Professional Standards Bureau to look into this & determine if any active department employees were involved.”
An e-mail from The Post to national Elks officials was not immediately returned, though a Lodge trustee told TMZ that the event was not an official club activity.
“It’s deplorable and inappropriate and the Lodge will take disciplinary action against [Fishell] and possibly the people who organized this event,” the trustee said.
