Child stars: From geeky to gorgeous, ABIGAIL BRESLIN
The actress’ role as Olive Hoover in “Little Miss Sunshine” earned her an Academy Award nomination at the age of 10 and by age 11, she made Forbes’ list of Young Hollywood’s Top-Earning Star’s. Now 18, when she’s not filming, she fills her days catching up on her favorite TV show and obsessing over an interesting tree-dwelling creature (what?).
PAUL BUTCHER
Since playing younger brother Dustin on “Zoey 101,” the actor has manage to land guest starring roles on the big and small screen. In 2008, his cover of the Chris Brown hit, “Gimme That” and the Maroon 5 classic, “This Love” led to a single release in 2010. Now, Butcher is pursuing a degree at UCLA when he’s not working on the set of his latest project.
DAKOTA FANNING
Her film debut at age eight as Lucy, the daughter of Sean Penn in the 2001 drama “I Am Sam” made her the youngest Screen Actors Guild Award nominee in history. Over the years, the actress has managed to avoid the pitfalls of drugs and tabloid gossip faced by many child stars and has maintained a steady stream of big screen acting roles.
DANIELLE FISHEL
Playing Cory’s love interest Topanga on the coming-of-age '90s sitcom “Boy Meets World” earned the actress cover spots on Seventeen and GQ magazines. During the last season, she dated a member of a popular boy band who later came out as gay (who?). Now 14 years later, the curvy actress is reprising her role as Topanga on a sitcom sequel, "Girl Meets World"
JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT
After an unforgettable role portraying an extraterrestrial posing as a human on “3rd Rock from the Sun,” the actor took a break from acting to attend Columbia University. In 2004 he dropped out to return to acting, landing co-starring gigs alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day-Lewis. When he’s not on set, he can be seen out and about with girlfriend and robotics CEO Tasha McCauley.
DEVON GUMMERSALL
Since portraying the socially awkward Brian Krakow on the teen cult classic “My So-Called Life,” the actor had a short-term marriage to a “Roswell” actress who is now married to “About a Boy” actor David Walton. From the looks of the hunky actor today, it’s hard to believe he once used co-star Jared Leto as a wingman to help him pick up girls.
ANTHONY MICHAEL HALL
His roles as the annoying geek who never got the girl in multiple John Hughes teen flicks (watch clips) helped launch his career. Unlike the characters in his early films, the now gorgeous actor didn’t seem to have a problem getting a blonde international actress and model (who?) to say yes to his marriage proposal.
GEORGIE HENLEY
She was only 10 years old when she made her acting debut as the faithful Lucy Pevensie in the “The Chronicles of Narnia” film series. Now in her late teens, the brunette starlet has broken away from the cutesy scripts and capitalizes on her beauty from time to time by dabbling in modeling.
NICHOLAS HOULT
The actor who starred opposite Hugh Grant in “About a Boy” is now all man and the ladies are paying attention. Just ask the A-list actress he hooked up with while filming the blockbuster "X-Men" series (who?).
BRYTON JAMES
From the age of four through 11, the actor played curly-haired Richie Crawford on the sitcom “Family Matters.” Since 2004, he bulked up and lost the cutesy curls for his Daytime Emmy Award-winning role as Neil and Drucilla’s adopted son, Devon Hamilton on CBS soap “The Young and the Restless.
SHIA LABEOUF
LaBeouf gained notoriety playing the selfish and immature Louis Stevens on Disney’s “Even Stevens,” and it seems as if the character’s pesky antics have carried over to the actor’s off-screen life. Let’s hope his arrests for disorderly conduct and picking fights is only a phase, so that he can get back to captivating legions of fans in leading big screen roles (what’s his latest?).
DANIEL CURTIS LEE
Since portraying cyber nerd Cookie Nelson on Nickelodeon’s “Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide,” the actor appeared as a jock and bully in season four of “Glee.” His stint on the small screen musical may be responsible for reigniting his love of music. Lee performs to packed audiences all over the country using his stage name, Saint Maurice.
CHAUNCEY LEOPARDI
Character Michael “Squints” Leopardi’s most memorable scene in 1993s “The Sandlot” was when he scammed a kiss out of pool lifeguard Wendy Peffercorn (watch it). Following the film, the actor went on to land reoccurring roles on “Gilmore Girls” and “Freaks and Geeks.” Now an adult, the geek once recognized by his signature black thick-framed glasses is finally being acknowledged as irresistible eye candy.
MATTHEW DAVID 'MATT' LEWIS
Did someone cast a bewitching spell on “Harry Potter’s” bumbly Neville Longbottom (watch clips)? Now that the series has ended and Lewis has shed the jagged teeth, prosthetic pointy ears and fat suit he wore for 10 years, the actor is virtually unrecognizable as the character that boosted his career.
JONATHAN LIPNICKI
Who can forget adorable little spike-haired Ray Boyd from 1996s “Jerry Maguire”? Now in his early 20s, the former child star has transformed into a buff tattooed fitness fanatic who practices mixed martial arts to keep his physique in shape.
TINA MAJORINO
Hearts melted as cute little Molly Singer attempted to orchestrate a romance between her widower father and her nanny/housekeeper in 1994s “Corrina, Corrina.” Majorino also gained fame as an adorable pink-dress wearing dance partner in "Napoleon Dynamite." Now approaching age 30, the actress is rumored to be off the market and soon to be engaged.
DANICA MCKELLAR
Winnie Cooper’s first kiss on the “The Wonder Years” was also the first time the actress kissed a boy. In an effort to shake her child star image, she wore lingerie in the July 2005 edition of “Stuff” magazine after fans voted her the '90s star they most wanted to see scantily clad. More recently, she strapped on her dancing shoes and busted a few moves with Valentin Chmerkovskiy on Season 8 of “Dancing with the Stars.”
JOSH PECK
The actor began to noticeably shed pounds in the third season of Nickelodeon’s live-action sitcom “Drake and Josh,” and by the fourth, he looked like a completely different person. Peck stated his decision to lose weight was sparked not only by the desire to lead a healthier and happier life, but also to set an example for the multitude of fans that look to him as a role model.
AMBER SCOTT
Scott’s career appears to have taken a nose dive since her only movie credit as little Maggie Banning in Stephen Spielberg’s 1991 film “Hook.” Since giving up her acting career, the former child star attended Trinity College and joined a Christian sorority (which one?).
JURNEE SMOLLETT-BELL
We witnessed the actress grow up in front of our eyes as sandy-haired Denise Frazer, the trouble-making best friend to the Olsen twins’ character Michelle Tanner on “Full House.” Now married, the actress has traded in small screen roles to work alongside award-winning actors, most notably Denzel Washington in his sophomore directorial effort, “The Great Debaters.”
JALEEL WHITE
“Family Matters” viewers got a glimpse of how pesky Steve Urkel would look without glasses, suspenders and that nasally voice when introduced to his suave alter-ego Stefan Urquelle (watch clips). When the show ended, White was 22 years old and found it difficult to find roles outside of the geek realm. His career was revived in 2012 when he signed on to “Dancing with the Stars” (check out his moves) and landed a hosting gig on Syfy game show “Total Blackout.
MADELINE ZIMA
The actress didn’t enjoy her experience playing Fran’s cute little scheming partner Gracie on “The Nanny,” claiming she was treated more like a prop than a human being. According to Zima, her on-set comfort level was again tested when her role on “Californication” required acting out controversial sex scenes with David Duchovny.
