Aura’s wireless Christmas lights takes the tedium out of holiday decorating

Aura’s wireless Christmas lights takes the tedium out of holiday decorating, Christmas lights never really change, and for good reason — they’re pretty and reliable. They come in a handful of different options, but you know what you’re getting yourself into when you pick up a box. It’s a string of lights with plugs on either end, and very little deviation. Even the lights that change colors are usually the result of a control box at the end of the cable. A new Kickstarter campaign is trying to shake things up a little bit with the help of wireless power and simple smartphone controlled LED panels.

Aura bulbs remove the light string entirely, and replaces it with ornament bulbs that do the glowing. What makes this setup special is where the energy comes from. Instead of a power cable wrapped around the tree a bunch of times, there’s a single cable connecting a ring to the Christmas tree. The downside is that you have to figure out a new way to manage lighting the tree and hanging your regular ornaments, but at the same time what you get in exchange is incredibly cool.

Aura bulbs put the LED lights inside regular looking ornaments, and as you can see above, once those lights are in range of the wireless power ring everything comes together. The folks behind Aura have plans for multiple tree sizes, and it looks like there’s going to be several kinds of bulbs available through the Aura Kickstarter. The only downside to participating in this crowdfunding project is that you’ll have to use your regular boring lights until these lights arrive next year.
