Winona State University, Both sides of Huff Street were packed with people sporting purple Warrior gear for Winona State University’s homecoming parade on Saturday.

Alumni, students, faculty and community members donned beads and a few wearing purple and white pinstripe overalls turned out for the parade, which had about 90 floats.

The theme of this year’s homecoming was “Out of this World.” Student clubs and Warrior athletics decorated floats and vehicles with spaceships, aliens and stars.

The nursing club had Buzz Lightyear costumes and their truck said, “We’ll take care of you to infinity and beyond.”

Carl Stange’s orientation class featured a float with a silver rocket and the students carrying plastic alien inflatables. Riding atop the rocket was freshman Alex Gruhlke.

Walking alongside the rocket were Kyra Anderson and Erynn Olson, experiencing their first homecoming at Winona State.

“It was awesome,” Anderson said. “People really liked the beads.”

Olson said the group worked on the float the night before the parade.

Popular Winona icons like Trester Trolley and ZaZa’s Pub and Pizzeria were also in the parade, along with sheriff candidates Ron Ganrude and Bill Spitzer.

Alumni were welcomed back to campus as part of the homecoming festivities. Those with “Distinguished Almuni” awards rode in the parade and threw candy. President Scott Olson and his wife Kelley were also in the parade.

A popular float with the audience was WsYou.com’s float and T-shirt launcher. Another was the men’s basketball team, who let audience members try to shoot basketballs into the hoop.

Other floats included the WSU Ducks Unlimited club, the Waterski and Wakeboard club, cheerleading squad and dance teams, fraternities and sororities, several athletic teams like gymnastics and football and the Winona State Pep Band.
