University of tennessee at knoxville, The home of Tennessee basketball is getting a $15 million facelift.
Studio Four Design will design and oversee the next phase of renovations at Thompson-Boling Arena, the Knoxville-based company announced Monday.
UT also awarded the recently finished Joan Cronan UT volleyball facility project to Studio Four. Design work on the Thompson-Boling project will begin immediately.
"We couldn't be more excited," Stacy Cox, Studio Four president, said in a release. "We were involved in the first major renovation of Thompson-Boling Arena several years ago and are excited to continue our relationship with UT on this next phase of the work."
The Thompson-Boling Arena project hinges on improving the interior features of the stadium that opened in 1987. Changes will include: updated men's and women's locker rooms, upgraded restrooms, concourse improvements, mechanical and electrical upgrades and a new roof.
Kevin Diegel, Studio Four vice president, said Thompson-Boling will remain open during renovations. He said the venue's locker rooms and restrooms have not been significantly updated since its opening. He expects the new-look locker rooms to help UT's recruiting.
"It will be equivalent to anything across the country," he said.
Studio Four was involved with the last renovations to Thompson-Boling, a two-phase, $35 million project UT announced in fall of 2008. Phase I included new seats, a center-hung scoreboard, and luxury suites. Phase II included the construction of a bridge to the G-10 parking garage.
