Teresa heinz kerry, After a long absence from Washington’s social scene, Teresa Heinz Kerry celebrated her 76th birthday Sunday with one of her best buddies — six-year-old Nino Al-Sabah — and a long list of A-list friends. Heinz Kerry, who was hospitalized in July 2013 with seizure-like symptoms, was surprised with a cake presented by Nino at the residence of his parents, Kuwaiti Ambassador Salem Al-Sabah and his wife, Rima.

“I can’t think of a nicer welcome back to Washington than this,” Heinz Kerry told the crowd attending the Kuwait-American Foundation dinner. “I’ve been gone for a year and a half — and so has my husband.” When the laughter died down, she continued: “But seriously, it is really nice to be back amongst friends.”

The cake was a surprise; the evening was officially a fundraiser for the Bob Woodruff Foundation, founded by the veteran ABC newsman after his 2006 injury in Iraq. The foundation focuses on wounded vets, and Woodruff led the applause when the MusiCorps Wounded Warrior Band led the “Happy Birthday” ovation for Heinz Kerry.

The guest list included her husband, John Kerry, Joe and Jill Biden, National Security Advisor Susan Rice, White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough, Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker, Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey, Wolf Blitzer, Andrea Mitchell, Jake Tapper and the ambassadors  from France, Britain, Italy, and Spain.
