Jim Harbaugh backs 49ers OC Greg Roman

Jim Harbaugh backs 49ers OC Greg Roman, San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman has become the whipping boy for the team’s offensive woes through a 4-4 start and the disheartening 13-10 loss to the St. Louis Rams on Sunday.

But is Roman more scapegoat or patsy?

Niners head coach Jim Harbaugh was asked Monday in his weekly media conference if he was “satisfied” with the job Roman is doing as his OC.

“Yes,” Harbaugh said, matter of factly.

“That’s ultimately, it’s up to the men in the room, coaches, players, we’re the ones that have to make the improvements and attack the areas that we can.”

The 49ers players are off on Mondays and return on Tuesdays. Harbaugh insinuated a team meeting was in the works to assess its direction at the season’s midway point.

“Rather than pick through each thing publicly, you know, I’d rather talk to the team about that,” Harbaugh said.

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick was sacked eight times by a Rams team that entered the game with six sacks on the season. And running back Frank Gore said the team has to figure out its offensive identity and stick to it.

The Niners have not had a rushing touchdown since Sept. 21, six games ago, and Gore has only one rushing score on the season, in Week 2.

“What we will do is move on to the next game and attack ... make improvements, doing the things that are going to help us win football games," Harbaugh said. "Eliminate things that are not going to help us win football games.”

But be clear, Harbaugh was not ready to place the blame solely on Roman.

“As you watch the tape, you see where we all have fingerprints on this from an offensive perspective,” Harbaugh said.

“It wasn’t just one guy. Wasn’t just one player, wasn’t just one coach. So that’s what I saw.”
