Jack and Dorice McLachlan

Jack and Dorice McLachlan, McLachlan, Dr. Jack Lamont - It is with great sadness the family of Jack McLachlan would like to announce the passing of our father, stepfather, husband, brother, uncle and friend. Jack surrounded by his family passed away in his West Vancouver home on December 13, 2010.The oldest of six children Jack was born in Huron, South Dakota where the family lived until they moved to Anacortes, WA in 1938. After graduating from Anacortes High School, Jack attended Western Washington College in Bellingham before transferring to Oregon State College where he received his undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Upon completion of his PHD he was awarded a fellowship to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute where he remained for two years. He began his academic career in Ottawa then moved to Halifax to work for the National Research Council of Canada as a Micro Marine Biologist.

An expert in his field he lectured and taught at Universities and research institutions around the world. In 1979 he received a fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada for his research of marine plants. One of the highlights of his life was receiving an award from the Emperor of Japan. Upon retiring from academic life he and his first wife, Dorice moved to Victoria where he lived until Dorice passed away.

He then moved to West Vancouver where he found pleasure in gardening, watching CFL and spending time with his children, stepchildren and their families. He and his present wife Doris not only enjoyed their home in West Vancouver but greatly appreciated time spent at their oceanfront cabin in Tofino. Jack inspired his family and students with his integrity, his knowledge and his dignity. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. We would like to give special thanks to the nursing care of the North Shore Community Health Services.
