Hunger Games: Mockingjay' eats Thanksgiving foes, Thanksgiving weekend movie-goers came back for a huge second helping of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1.
The returning film cleaned up over the holiday weekend, trouncing the fresh film competition — the animated Penguins of Madagascar and the R-rated Horrible Bosses 2.
After Mockingjay took the box office crown during its opening weekend November 21, Jennifer Lawrence and her band of rebels earned an estimated $83 million during the entire five-day Thanksgiving holiday and $57 million for the three-day weekend.
It's the third highest five-day Thanksgiving weekend total on record.
"It's very impressive, The Hunger Games is just what the audience wanted for Thanksgiving," says Paul Dergarabedian, box office analyst for Rentrak. "The movie was perfectly positioned with its opening, gained momentum and got a big Thanksgiving holiday boost."
The third of four Hunger Games films has earned more than $480 million in worldwide box office in 10 days of release.
