Five Dead in Suicide Blast on British Embassy Vehicle in Kabul, Two British embassy workers were among five people killed in a suicide attack in the Afghan capital on Thursday, a senior police official told NBC News. One of the staff members was British, the other Afghan and the three others killed were Afghan civilians, the official said. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the suicide car-bomb which targeted an embassy vehicle on Kabul's Jalalabad Road.

At least 31 others, including three embassy staff, were injured, according to two senior police officials, who asked not to be named. The nationalities of the dead were confirmed to NBC News by Interior Ministry Spokesman Sediq Sediqqi. He said the Afghan driver of the British embassy vehicle was among those killed.

A spokesman for the U.K.'s Foreign Office told NBC News that "a British embassy vehicle was attacked in Kabul this morning." He added: "We are working with Afghan officials to establish details." Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for "the suicide attack on the foreign invaders" in a message on Twitter. The Taliban were ousted from power in Afghanistan by a U.S.-led coalition in 2001.
