Mookie Blaylock to Serve 3 Years in Prison for Vehicular Homicide, Retired NBA All-Star point guard Daron "Mookie" Blaylock will serve three years in prison after entering a guilty plea for vehicular homicide on Monday.
Steve Visser of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported the news. Blaylock, 47, was actually sentenced to 15 years but was assessed a lesser prison term as part of a plea deal.
Although he didn't have any alcohol in his system at the time of the crash that killed Monica Murphy on May 31, 2013, Blaylock had a history of abusing the substance and was prone to seizures as a result.
Visser's report also featured what attorney Amanda Palmer had to say regarding the victim's husband, Frank Murphy, and the exchange he'd had with Blaylock in court.
"[Blaylock] said something to the effect that the accident had changed him, and I think he was referring to his drinking," Palmer said. "Mr. Murphy spoke and said he understood it was a negotiated sentence. ... I can't say he went so far to say he was OK with it, but I guess he let the court know he didn’t oppose it."
Blaylock's defense team argued that the crash was brought on by a medical condition that caused Blaylock to black out behind the wheel.
That was also the basis of the reckless driving and vehicular homicide charges to which Blaylock pleaded guilty. Doctors had advised him not to drive since he was prone to seizures. Blaylock had multiple prior DUI offenses, according to Palmer.
