Feeney made his money as a co-founder of the Duty Free Shoppers Group in 1960. DFS became the world's largest travel retailer and in 1996 Feeney and Robert Warren Miller's interests were acquired by Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy for $1.63 billion. After the sale Chuck set aside $26 million for his 2400 long term staff. Feeney was inducted into Irish America magazine's Hall of Fame in 2011. He founded The Atlantic Philanthropies in 1982.As of 2012 the foundation made grants of over $6 billion. Feeney is also the subject of the documentary Secret Billionaire: The Chuck Feeney Story. He received Ireland's Presidential Distinguished Service Award for Irish Abroad in 2012.
