Meat recall: Unsanitary conditions cause recall, illness reports not made yet, A meat recall is going into immediate effect this week following a major Windsor meat company increasing its recall of poultry and meat products, citing that they were made in unsanitary conditions. There have been no reports of illness from any consumers yet, but health officials encourage any who feel they may be sick from the tainted beef should visit a local hospital right away. The CS Monitor helps reveal what you need to know on the important health warning this Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013.
The meat recall has been officially expanded by an announcement from the U.S. Agriculture Department. Although no illnesses have been cited as a result of the major health concern, the warning strongly encourages those not to consume any more of the recalled products. These unsanitary conditions have been said to include rodent activity within production lines and poor washing treatments.
For those interested in knowing which meats have been affected — as stated in the press release:
“The additional recalled products can be identified by the establishment number "Est. 20309" inside the USDA Mark of Inspection. They include "Corner Post Meats" brand hams and bacon, "Old Style Sausage" brand smoked andouille sausage and "Old Style Sausage" brand smoked Kielbasa sausage. All products being recalled are packaged in retail-ready packaging of various sizes. The products were produced between April 1, 2013, and Dec. 5, 2013 and can be identified by four-digit Julian dates ranging between 3091 and 3339. The products were sold in Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.”
Following the U.S.D.A. Food Safety Inspection Service highlighting that these unsanitary conditions spanned from poor facility procedures and present rodent activity, the meat plant is said to be on temporary shutdown. The assignment due by inspectors at the Windsor food facility have been suspended, and an in-depth investigation into the factors that led to the meat recall is underway.
