Becks admits there has been a few ‘rough patches’, but highlighted that United qualified for the next phase of the Champions League without problems.

“I think David Moyes is a great manager,” he said during an exclusive interview with MUTV.

“The league results have not been great, but I think there was always going to be a transition period with obviously the manager leaving and a new manager coming in.”

Beckham, who refers to Sir Alex as a ‘father figure’ was one of Ferguson’s protégé’s, making his first team debut for Manchester United as a 17-year-old in 1992.

He won the Premier League title six times, the FA Cup twice, and the Champions League in 1999, before moving on to Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan and Paris Saint German.

He made 374 first team appearances in all competitions under Ferguson, but believes United has to move on after Sir Alex retired at the end of last season.

“The manager [Sir Alex Ferguson] has now moved on, he was part of this club for so many years and even though he is still part of it, it’s important that the club still moves on.

“The fans will never forget what Sir Alex did for Manchester United, but there is a new manager that the players are behind and the fans are behind and I think he’ll be very successful.”

The next chance for David Moyes to prove he can be successful this season already comes tonight when Manchester United welcomes Stoke in the League Cup quarter-final.
