60 Twins, A Chinese woman at 60 delivered twins and made headlines for her exceptional case overriding the nation's strict one-child policy. Sheng Hailin, now 63, had IVF treatments following the devastating loss of her 29-year-old daughter who died from carbon monoxide poisoning in 2009.
The Christian Post reports Dec. 26 that Sheng was experiencing extreme loneliness and the only way she felt she could help overcome that was to have another baby.
"To survive and free myself from the loneliness, I decided to have another child in my old age," she said.
The People's Liberation Army Hospital no. 105 fulfilled Sheng's wish to have another baby via IVF. She ended up having twins at 60 born May 25, 2010. Sheng gave birth to twin girls, Zhizhi and Huihui.
This rare case of a woman at 60 years of age having twins was done without an explanation from the Chinese government. Her two daughters are now three-years-old. Due to traveling for working the extra long hours so she can support her daughters, it means less time for her to be around for them. She and her husband pay two babysitters to care for them when they are not available.
China's strict one-child policy went into effect over 30 years ago. The report said that over a million families since then have "lost their sole heir." It was just last month that the government decided that if either a husband or wife is an only child, they are allowed two children.
