Transgender homecoming queen crowned at Orange County high school, A transgender homecoming queen was crowned for the first time ever at a high school in Orange County. Cassidy Lynn Campbell, 16, was bestowed the honor in front of the student body at marina High School in tony Huntingdon Beach, Calif. According to the Los Angeles Times on Sept. 21, Campbell was born male as Lance Campbell, but always thought of herself as a girl and broke into tears of joy at the ceremony.

'If I win it would mean that the school recognizes me as the gender I always felt I was,' Cassidy, 16, told The Times before the election.

The transgender homecoming queen was chosen by her classmates from a field of 10 entrants, which were narrowed to a list of five finalists. The finalists were all called up to the podium where the winner was announced. Campbell was overcome with emotion and her classmates ran down to the stage to hug her.

The transgender homecoming queen had taken estrogen injections and hormone blockers since the beginning of high school to help her make the transition into a woman. Campbell is also a popular video blogger on YouTube. She only found out last week that she was in the running for homecoming queen.
