According to Irvine police, the shootout took place when officers were trying to serve the suspect a search warrant over sexual assault charges. The initial investigation began as police attempted to serve the warrant at the 1100 block of Crested Bird at 10:30 this morning.
When Irvine officers made contact with the suspect prior to the shooting in a nearby parking lot, the suspect was said to be uncooperative. Under still-disclosed circumstances, the 35-year-old man was then shot. Confirmation as to what sparked the shooting has not been revealed at this time.
According to the report, the suspect was Ronald Williams, 35-year-old. He was said to be treated on scene for the gunshot wound, then taken to a hospital and remains in police custody. Investigators were in the process of serving the warrant over sexual charges in connection with a case for lewd acts with a minor.
