Catherine zeta-jones bipolar disorder triggered by, A spokeswoman for Catherine Zeta-Jones says the actress and her husband, Michael Douglas, “are taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage.”

Publicist Cece Yorke said in an email to The Associated Press on Wednesday that there would be no further comment. A phone call to a representative for Douglas wasn’t immediately returned.

The couple, who have two children together, have reportedly been on the rocks since earlier this year, with Douglas’ struggle with throat cancer and Zeta-Jones bipolar disorder each taking its toll on the marriage.

“The stress has taken a toll on their marriage,” a source told People magazine, with that publication’s editor telling ABC news that “several factors” have played into the split – chiefly Douglas’ suggestion earlier this year that his throat cancer was caused by performing oral sex on women.

““It’s undeniable that his throat cancer and her bi-polar disorder created a perfect storm of tension and issues that were really hard to overcome,” editor Peter Castro said. “(Douglas) gave very candid interviews about his sexual past that she really bristled at,” Castro said. “She was not happy about his comments and that sort of got the ball rolling in terms of the split.”
