World record halibut: You have got to see this humungous halibut, A world record halibut has been hauled in by a German angler fishing in Norwegian waters, reports the Huffington Post on Aug. 17.
The whopper halibut, caught in July by stunned fisherman Marco Liebenow, is now officially a record-buster, says the International Game Fishing Association. Marco’s halibut weighed in at 515 pounds. Now that’s a heck of a halibut!
The previous record was a 459-pound Pacific halibut caught off the coast of Alaska in 1996.
The record-breaking halibut, which weighs more than a gorilla, took an hour and a half to bring it to the surface. Once there, Liebenow and his three mates realized there was no way the fish was going to make it onto their small chartered boat.
The men tied the fish up by the tail and towed it back to shore, where it was hoisted quayside by a crane.
Tour company Angelreisen Hamburg organized the fishing trip to Kjollefjord, Norway, for Liebenow and his friends. David Bottcher, head of the company, said Marco, who does not speak English, called the catch a “fish of a lifetime.”
“When he first hooked it, it felt like he had caught a submarine because it was so big,” Bottcher reported Marco as saying. “It took four men to bring it towards their 19-foot boat and then they could only put a sling around its tail and pull it back to the harbor. Marco was elated afterwards and celebrated with the boat skipper and their housekeeper by having a few beers.”
As for where the fish ended up?
Marco donated the halibut to a local fish dealer. Now that’s a lot of fish and chips.
