Addressing the mourners at the Memorial Church of Stanford University, Mona Simpson told how the inventor gazed into the distance and said “OH WOW. OH WOW. OH WOW.”

Here are the top ten final words of other famous faces throughout history…

1. Queen Marie Antoinette : “Pardon me, sir. I did not do it on purpose.”

These were the famous last words of the Queen of France as she accidentally stepped on the foot of her executioner as she went to the guillotine. She was tried and convicted of treason and executed by October 16, 1793.

2. Mozart : “The taste of death is upon my lips. I feel something that is not of this earth.”

The influential classical composer died aged 35 on December 5, 1791, after a short illness. He remained completely unconscious until two hours before his death and his body swelled so he could no longer sit up in bed or move on his own.

3. Karl Marx : “Go on, get out! Last words are for fools who haven’t said enough!”

This was shouted by the German philosopher at his housekeeper after she asked if he had any last words. Marx died on March 14, 1883, from bronchitis and pleurisy, after 15 months of ill health.

4. Oscar Wilde : ““My wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. One or the other of us has to go.”

Known for his wit, the final words of the Irish playwright, poet and novelist were equally interesting as he died of cerebral meningitis on November 30, 1900, aged 46.

5. Jack Daniels : “One last drink, please.”

These were the fitting last words of the famous whiskey distiller, who died on October 10, 1911, of blood poisoning. The infection started in his big toe, which he injured after kicking a safe. His last words were used in an advertising campaign for his Jack Daniels Tennessee whiskey in 2006.

6. L. Frank Baum : “Now I can cross the shifting sands.”

The American poet and playwright, best known for created The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, died on May 5, 1919, after suffering a stroke. Baum whispered these final words to his wife, referring to the magical desert surrounding the Land of Oz.

7. Malcolm X : “Brothers! Brothers, please! This is a house of peace!”

The African-American Muslim public speaker was assassinated while giving a speech at Manhattan’s Audubon Ballroom. A disturbance broke out in the crowd and, as Malcolm tried to calm the situation, a man rushed forward and shot him with a sawn-off shotgun and two others fired handguns.

8. Groucho Marx : “Die, my dear? Why, that’s the last thing I’ll do!”

After over-working himself to the point where his health seriously deteriorated, the American comedian and film star died of pneumonia on August 19, 1977. He had the longest life of all the Marx brothers and once joked in an interview that his epitaph read: "Excuse me, I can't stand up.”

9. Bob Marley : “Money can’t buy life.”

The reggae star uttered these last words to son Ziggy before he died aged 36 on May 11, 1981. The singer died of malignant melanoma, which was found in his toe in July 1977. He declined an amputation and the disease eventually spread to his lungs and brain.

10. Steve Irwin : “Don’t worry, they don’t usually swim backwards.”

The Australian wildlife expert was killed while filming a documentary on September 4, 2006. Irwin was fatally pierced in the chest by a stingray spine while snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef.
